Spiritual Discernment: Now What?

Discernment is scarce in the Church today. And people who lack discernment usually think they have it. But let’s say you are a person who has diligently studied the Bible, and you have honed the skill of discernment. You recognize false teaching when you hear it because you know the truth of God’s Word well.

Now what? How does one use that discernment in a Godly way? It isn’t as easy as it sounds. The following words from Hannah Anderson spoke to me as I contemplated…

Is Judging Others a Form of Bullying?

While reading my Bible this morning I came across scriptures which was a bit of an eye opener for me. It made me think, Is Judging Others a Form of Bullying? Paul was in Rome preaching and this is what he had to say;

For the wrath of god is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.

Romans 1:18,19

God says we all know because he made it evident within us. If you continue reading Paul tells us that even though they knew God they failed to honor and give thanks to him. Their reasonings were pointless and useless. So, what did God do?

Basically, God tells them they can have it their own way. Since they refused to listen to reason, they refused to acknowledge God, to give him glory, to give thanks as our Creator he allowed their dark hearts to rule them.

Therefore God gave them up to vile impurity in the lust of their hearts, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

Romans 1:24,25(NASB)

See what I mean? God allowed their lustful and impure hearts to rule them because they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood and worshipped the creature instead of the Creator. In other words, they put themselves first, even before God! So what exactly did God do?

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, and like wise the men, too, abandon natural relations with women and burned in their desires toward one another, males with males committing shameful acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

Romans 1:26,27

But God didn’t stop there, because it’s not about one type of sin, it’s all sin. It’s what’s in a person’s heart. If people fail to acknowledge Him as our Creator, to give him the glory he deserves he’ll give you up to a depraved mind. Look how Paul desribes it.

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper, people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unfeeling, and unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them.

Romans 1:28,32

In Romans 2, Paul actually teaches how it’s not correct to judge those who do these things. Paul says, For those of you who judge these people, you’re just condemning yourself because you’re guilty of the same sins! Fantastic! But the way Paul words it is wonderful, let’s take a look.

Therefore you have no excuse, you foolish person, everyone of you who passes judgment; for in that matter in which you judge someone else, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you suppose this, you foolish person who passes judgment on those who practice such things, and yet does them as well, that you will escape the judgment of God?

Romans 2:1,2

Isn’t that priceless? As Christians we’re not suppose to go around judging others, it’s not what we’re called to do. As Christians we have a duty to our fellow man but it’s not judging others, finger pointing, calling people out or gossiping about them. When we do those things it’s merely bullying. Hasn’t our world had enough of all that? And look what Jesus taught in Matthew;

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s and pay no attention to the plank in your own? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Matthew 7:1,5(NIV)

So yes, there’s consequences for the path we choose, whether it’s to follow God or our own desires. But there’s also consequences for those who follow God, yet, chooses to judge the act of others. YES, we are to standup for what’s right, but we are NOT to judge others while doing so. We all sin, none of us are perfect, and especially, in the eyes of God.

And just like my momma used to say, you need to cleanup around your own doorsteps before telling somone else to…
