As I journey through the scriptures I came across something I was a bit surprised at and to fully understand the significance will require writing of scripture for clarification. What I’m referring to and researching is the difference between the Spirit of Truth and the Holy Spirit (known also as the Set-Apart Spirit, Spirit of God or Spirit). What I’ve come to realize is, the Holy Spirit is different from what Jesus describes as the Spirit of Truth. But to back everything I’m saying, I’ll refer to the scriptures.
The Spirit of Truth
John 14:16 – And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever, the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
John 15:26 – But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
John 16:13 – However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, he will guide you into all Truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears he will speak; and he will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
Points to Consider:
- He’s the Spirit of Truth who is a helper (or a comforter, or Advocate depending on your translation)
- Jesus prays to the Father and He will give you another Helper
- Will be with you forever
- World doesn’t see Him or know Him
- For He dwells with you and will be in you
- Jesus says to His disciples I will not leave you Orphans I will come to you
- He testifies to Jesus
- He will glorify Jesus, he will take of what is Jesus and declare it to you
- Doesn’t speak on His own authority only what He hears
- Will guide you into all Truth
Some additional scriptures to help us understand who the Spirit of Truth is;
John 14:6 – Jesus answered, I am the Way, and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Romans 8:9 – You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in You. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, He does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your Spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead, will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.
John 12:49 – I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it. And I know that His command leads to Eternal Life. So I speak exactly what My Father has told Me to say.
With the scriptures it becomes evident that the Spirit of Truth is the Spirit of Christ. Now let’s see how Jesus explained the Holy Spirit( or Spirit of God, Set Apart Spirit).
The Holy Spirit
John 14:25 – These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
Points to Consider:
- The Only Scripture Jesus mentions the Holy Spirit (Set-Apart Spirit or Sacred)
- Father sends automatically, Jesus doesn’t pray for Him to be sent
- He teaches all things
- Reminds of what Jesus said to them
Apostle Paul Points to Consider:
Romans 8:12 – For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the Sons of God.
1 Corinthians 6:11 – And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
1 Corinthians 6:19 – Or do you not know that your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God and you are not your own?
1 Corinthians 3:16 – Do you not know that you are the Temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you?
1 Corinthians 2:10-13 – But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of man except his own spirit within him? So, too, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God.
John 6:45 – It is written in the Prophets: And they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from Him comes to Me.
From everything spoken of by the Apostle Paul in these scriptures, it seems the Spirit, the Spirit of God and the Holy Spirit are the same. And when you compare the Holy Spirit to the Spirit of Truth there clearly are differences. However, Jesus does tell us;
Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
We know we receive the Holy Spirit as a guarantee, when we believe in Jesus, but, what if we only receive the Spirit of Christ when we truly begin to follow Him. Because Jesus clearly distinguished the two Spirits from one another and the Apostle Paul stated if we don’t have the Spirit of Christ, we don’t belong to Him. Plus, I remember Jesus stating;
Matthew 10:37,38 – Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me; and anyone who does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.
Christ clearly felt the need to distinguish between the two, so shouldn’t we?
Plus, we’re told in, Luke 1:35 that the Holy Spirit will come up on you, and the Power of the Most High will over shadow you; for that reason the Holy Child will be called the Son of God.
And could the Spirit of Truth (the Spirit of Christ) be what He was referring to in Matthew 10:37,38?
I guess I have more questions while trying to understand this. Because it appears the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God.
Any thoughts, please let me know, I’d greatly appreciate it.
